★ An Amazon Best Children''s Book of the Year selection

From the New York Times bestselling author/illustrator of Max the Brave comes an inspiring and adorable picture book about a pair of unlikely friends who face down a pack of bullies.

In this timely and charming story about the importance of being true to yourself, mindfulness, and standing by your friends, we meet Leonard, a lion, and his best friend Marianne, a . . . duck. Leonard and Marianne have a happy life together—talking, playing, writing poems, and making wishes—until one day a pack of bullies questions whether it''s right for a lion and a duck to be pals. Leonard soon learns there are many ways to be a lion, and many ways to be a friend, and that sometimes finding just the right words can change the world . . .

This sweet, funny, thoughtful, and much-needed story will open up readers'' eyes to the importance of being who they are and not backing down to hurtful criticism. It''s an empowering tale about connecting with others and choosing kindness over bullying, and shows children how angry and provocative words can be overcome by empathy and inner courage.

This book was recommended by the IG mommy bloggers. I loved it and my 6 year old grandson--who is a very strong reader, read it by himself. He said it reminded him of me. Nice compliment! Not for kids younger than first grade or so--unless they are extra sensitive and supper emotionally in touch. It''s a pretty complex theme. Beautiful, beautiful illustrations. I used it for lion week.

We just sometimes aren''t brave enough to pause, ponder and make the choice that''s difficult - especially when it shakes some of the fear we''ve hidden back to the surface to face. Get it the book! I first run into this book on the local library, I read it to my daughter and her and I LOVED IT. I love the fact that it is about a lion just trying to be who he is, despite the pressures from the other lions. This is a great book!

With a crunch and a chomp, this story of a poetry-loving lion will have you hooked as we learn that you don’t have to be what people expect you to be; it’s okay to just be yourself. I can’t wait to see this book with the illustrations; I love Ed Vere’s work, especially Grumpy Frog, and I really want to see his story of Leonard come to life! However, just going on the text alone, this is a fantastic book that little ones will love. I can imagine that reading it aloud is great fun with all the rhymes! I really enjoyed reading How To Be A Lion and am definitely going to be adding it to my collection of favourite picture books!

Such a fantastic book - absolutely adore it. We need more books like this for little ones, especially boys, to counter toxic masculine narratives. It’s okay to be a boy and be friends with girls and it’s okay not to be part of the boisterous gang.
