Description

Product Description

Formed in the aftermath of the Horus Heresy, the Flesh Tearers, veterans of the Blood Angels Legion now cast adrift, gather behind their leader, Chapter Master Amit, and set out to forge their own destiny.

None of the scions of Sanguinius are as bloody or wrathful as the Flesh Tearers. The fury of this Chapter, scorned by the Blood Angels and many of their successors, is legendary. Within them, the Black Rage is made manifest, a curse on the Imperium and its enemies. In the uncertain years following the end of the Great Heresy, it fell to Amit to lead this benighted Chapter. Upon his shoulders lay a heavy burden, for to prevent their own self-annihilation, the Flesh Tearers must not only fight their many foes but their very nature itself.

About the Author

Andy Smillie is best known for his visceral Flesh Tearers novellas, Sons of Wrath and Flesh of Cretacia, and the novel Trial by Blood. He has also written a host of short stories starring this brutal Chapter of Space Marines and a number of audio dramas including and The Kauyon, Blood in the Machine, Deathwolf, From the Blood, Hunger and The Assassination of Gabriel Seth.

Having been a fan of Black Library books for 15+ years, I''d say I''ve read quite a few great books, and quite a few duds. Definitely more of the former, though. This glorious time is on another level. Absolutely gripping and visceral, brutal and exciting. This is my first time reading anything by Andy Smillie, and I can''t praise him enough on his prose and ability as a writer in general, much less capturing the grim dark feel of Warhammer 40k. Nailed it flawlessly. His Flesh Tearers have usurped the Space Wolves as my new favorite "good guys" to read about now. Nassir Amit and Gabriel Seth are written just perfect, spot on and bad ass. Highly recommend for any into military sci fi, or just high octane violence coupled with exquisite writing. Buy this. Read this.

This is the ultimate Flesh Tearers resource and discusses both the chapter''s early foundations and recent history, typically from the point of view of the respective chapter masters. The narrative of the second book can get a bit confusing at times but overall it paints and interesting picture of this often-misunderstood Space Marine chapter and presents an intriguing counterpoint to the larger Blood Angels chapter, as well as providing interesting details on many of the other successor chapters. For Blood Angels fans, this is a must-read!

I cannot say enough good things about this book. Comprised of several shorter stories to create an overall narrative -- a couple of which I have listened to (many times) as audiobooks -- I leave this book with mixed feelings. On one hand, I really enjoyed it all. On the other, I want more! More of Amit in the aftermath of the Heresy, and more of Seth in the 41st millennium. My favorite characters in the stories would be Amit and Harahel. A job well done, Mr. Smillie!

Liked it, the very first story is pretty much skipable/forgettable. It only serves to setup the nature of this particular chapters ''genetic disorder in hiding'' that most SM Chapters seem to suffer from in one way or another (in this case, think Space Wolves) and their black sheep pecking order within their parent Legion. Otherwise it''s Space Marines vs Dinosaurs.

The rest of the books within the Omnibus are a first notch revealing of just how brutal and actually blood thirsty this chapter is and makes a fair argument for their destruction, as is actually decided upon by a secret tribunal in the last story.

Overall goodstuff.

The book(s) are pretty good and entertaining. The action is really good. In one scene a Flesh Tearer rips off a Chaos militia''s head and throws it into the chest of another so hard it stops his heart and he dies.

An excellent collection of Flesh Tearer stories and the first of its kind, this sets the tone and mood for my favorite successor chapter. Gives you the bare bones essentials as to who they are, where they came from, and what they must do to avoid the inquisition wiping them out. I have to say, the more extreme their measures, the more insane their opponents, the more I look forward to playing them in the game. Who would dare stand against so much concentrated rage contained in so few space marines? (Answer: Orks. Silly, stupid Orks)

Of the 3 novellas in this book, the best by far is the third; Trial of Blood. It centres around Gabriel Seth being put on trial by the Blood Angel''s chapter and the rest of the successors. Seth puts up an interesting point of view that differs from his accusers(well,he would, wouldn''t he!) but calls into question the whole point of the Blood family. Add in a surprising twist of a threat he makes to another character and it adds up to an interesting read. The first two books about Chapter Master Amit are good also, showing a chapter barely holding it together, but the Seth one is best by far.

I guess I have to diverge from the majority of the posted reviews for this book so far, but I feel its one of the weakest 40K books I''ve read in some time. To me, this could have easily been a ''Chaos Marine'' novel. If there was a ''search and replace'' on the word ''Emperor'' with ''Khorne'' there would have been no discernable change to the novel. I ''get'' (maybe you''ll argue) that the Flesh Tearers are flawed and of a semi unstable gene seed, but basically they essentially no different than any chaos space marine you''ve ever read, with perhaps even less depth. They routinely turn on each other and do things you''d associate with the powers of darkness, rather than the Emperors light. I understand we are not talking about ''Ultramarines'' here, in the sense of noble purpose or what not, but the decisions made by the characters in the novel were not in keeping of what I was expecting. I found the novel shallow, the characters not interesting (generally) and found it a chore to get through. I Normally love my Warhammer 40K novels, but this one was easily one of the worst I''ve read out of all the ones I''ve bought over the last several years. The only part of the novel I truly enjoyed was the space battle against the ''psykers'' which I thought was VERY well done and gripping. The rest of the book I found hard to believe I was reading about Space Marines, rather than Orks or Chaos characters.
